We would like to take a few minutes to explain to you the benefits of using log siding. A trend today in log home construction is to build hybrid log homes. A hybrid Log home is built using the traditional stick frame construction and applying log siding to the exterior and interior of the home. Using log siding offers great flexibility as you can put siding on the outside and inside or finish the interior with tongue and groove paneling or drywall.
With the hybrid method of construction all of your plumbing and electrical are hidden in the walls. Log siding is kiln dried so you do not have settling or checking. It is tongue and grooved for a tight fit and easy construction, there is no need to have a crane on site to liftlogs in place which offers a cost saving. It has a built in drip edge so you do not get water settling on thelog to cause rot. It also does not have to be chinked so you have a labor and cost saving.
There are two main species of wood used today for half log siding, White Cedar and White Pine. Half log siding comes in many different profiles from 2×8 to 3×10. All these profiles can be done in a smooth face or hewned face. Another siding called Adze siding is an Appalachian style siding used in the south for a rustic oldstyle look. It is made from 1×12 pine and run through a machine to give it the rough look. It has a chinkstrip that you can add a strip to so it has the old chink style look of the old Appalachian homes, or youcan leave out the strip for an entirely different look. It is also tongue and grooved.
You can also purchasedifferent styles of trim for around your windows and doors to match which ever style you choose. You can finish off your dream home with butt and pass corners which are available in a d log shape or roundlog. Butt and Pass corners are made from full logs to give the look of a full log home. You can also finish it off with outside vertical log corners.
So go ahead and build your dream home, and feel free using log siding while you’re at it.
