For a while now we have had customers from all around the country asking us for certain accessory products and supplies to help install and improve some of our raw products and materials. We sell a lot of these accessory products directly from our showroom to our local building community, so we got to thinking, which is dangerous for us, “We should make it easier and cheaper for our clients from all over to simply buy those things directly from us, without having to drive to the showroom.”

We decided to put our crack team of young web and marketing nerds on the task and “bam”, problem solved. It is now a simple and easy process to order our accessory products and materials directly from the Homestead Timbers website.

Be sure to keep an eye out because we will constantly be adding new products and materials to the Online Shop, and if you have needs or ideas for things that you would like to be able to buy directly from the website, let us know and we are all ears.

Also, thanks to our crack team of nerds, we will be offering discounts and specials on our Facebook and Twitter pages, so we’d be honored if you followed us there too.

Thanks for listening to the Boss Man ramble, and thank you sincerely for your continued patronage and support of us. The entire Homestead Timbers family appreciates you and we strive everyday to honor your choice to do business with us.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Randy Dokter

The interior is finished in our 1×8 tongue and grooved paneling, the outside is wavy red cedar. A quick tip from the professionals at Homestead Timbers: when undertaking a project of this “nature”, make sure that you have a really good sander on hand. Sliver level is considered code RED and is to be avoided at all costs.

Summer is quickly coming to an end! We at Homestead Timbers thought it was important to inform you of some Fall maintenance tips for your log home so that you can be sure to settle in and enjoy a warm, dry, and comfortable winter from within your home. Since doing exterior maintenance is such an unpleasant task in bad weather, it is a good idea to get it done before the rains come and the snow flies.

First, if you have not cleaned the exterior of your home in a couple of years it would be advisable to rent a pressure washer. Pressure washing your home will wash away any built up dirt that inevitably accumulates on the surface of the finish. As wind and rain hit those accumulated dirt particles, the movement of the dirt can abrade the finish. Pressure washing will also remove any buildup of pollen which turns acidic with moisture and can slowly erode your home’s finish. This may also be a great time to apply a fresh coat of stain/preservative your exterior. Homestead Timbers has a variety of quality finishes to protect your home.
Once your home’s exterior is cleaned, you will be able to more easily see problem areas. Thoroughly examine the exterior of the home by walking slowly around the outside and looking carefully at your log work. Examine for any signs of insect problems such as small holes with wood powder around them. Look for any discolored logs which might identify mold growth and/or finish failure.
Check corners for gaps, moisture damage, and decay. Small gaps may permit water and/or air penetration and should be filled with Log Builder caulking which is available here at Homestead Timbers. Log Builder is designed to adhere well to logs and will expand and contract as your logs do from freeze to thaw and will not crack, peel, or pull away. If you believe you have found rot in an area, tap the area with a small hammer and listen for a hollow sound. Additionally, use an awl or other sharp tool to press into the area. If your logs sound hollow or your awl sinks into the location, you probably have a rot problem. Small areas of rot can be repaired with Wood Epox or Liquid Wood. Large areas will need to be replaced with new logs. Homestead Timbers is here to supply you with either need and expert advice.
If your home has chinking between the logs, make sure that it is still adhering. If it is cracking and/or falling out, then it’s time to replace. Again, give us a call, stop by, or visit us on the web (www.homesteadtimbers.com) for more details on our chinking supplies.
Homestead Timbers carries a wide range of products to protect and maintain your log home. We can answer questions and provide insightful tips to help you enjoy a comfortable, warm winter season.
